L'album realizzò un buon successo di vendite, collezionando 5 milioni di copie vendute negli Stati Uniti. Raggiunse la vetta delle classifiche inglesi, mentre in quelle americane si posizionò al terzo posto.
Tuttavia vi furono molte critiche da parte dei fans, riguardo alle tracce scelte per questa raccolta. Lo stesso Axl Rose, insieme ad altri ex membri della band, promosse una battaglia legale per evitare la pubblicazione di questo album. La Geffen Records rispose che Axl Rose aveva avuto tutto il tempo che gli serviva per rispettare gli impegni contrattuali con la pubblicazione di un nuovo album, ma che questo non era avvenuto. Di conseguenza la casa discografica realizzò questa raccolta per colmare questa lacuna.
È presente anche l'inedita cover dei Rolling Stones di Sympathy for the Devil (già nell'OST di Intervista col Vampiro, del 1994). Ad aprile 2011 ha totalizzato la 200 settimana alla US 200 Album di Billboard.
